The real problem is that Eclipse has a ridiculously complicated build and deployment system that is painful to adapt to Ubuntu, and while there are some provisions for shared-user deployments with a Unixy filesystem layout, in reality upstream never tests them and they don't work very well.
Oracle Java is so similar to OpenJDK that it's doubtful there would be any serious hurdles. Besides, Eclipse4.3 is tested on OpenJDK 7 ( see http:// www.eclipse. org/eclipse/ development/ readme_ eclipse_ 4.3.html# TargetOperating Environments ), so it shouldn't be an issue.
