Bug Description

Binary package hint: dolphin

if i hit "split view" the right panel (information or bookmarks) doubles its size, so that i manually have to resize it in order to be able to actually see my files (i got a small 1024*768 resolution). the size isnt remembered by the program and each time i have to resize it again.

happens on up-to-date kubuntu gutsy, dolphin 0.9.2

I can confirm the amazing changeable size of the 'remaining space on disk' indicator; I can't confirm the rest of it.

The size of the left pane seems to depend on the length of the filename (and height of the space needed to display it). The size of the right pane's 'size remaining' seems completely unrelated to anything, and while mousing over folders it shrinks to normal one-line height. Mouse off and it's back to being something like 4 lines tall.

Kubuntu 7.10 AMD64, up to date as of 2007/10/04

Hi, I have the first mentioned behaviour, too.

Clicking on "split view" blows up the right panel to a huge width.

Another strange thing: When I click on "split view" several times, then every time the right panel has a different size afterwards!

Some details about my Ubuntu installation: I've upgraded today from Feisty to Gutsy. Kubuntu AMD64. I'm using a vanilla 2.6.23 kernel and the NVidia graphics driver from their website.

Also seeing the right sidebar blowing up to a great width at the expense of the right hand folder view.

Turning split view on and off multiple times without resizing the sidebar seems to, after a couple of goes, settle the width down so that just under two columns of the right hand folder view (1280x800, dolphin in icons view) are visible.

From what I can see of the space remaining indicator, it follows the height of the text next to it - it's growing vertically as the text next to it is squashed up and takes up more lines.

Incidentally, is anyone actually listening to us here? The subscribers pane shows only those of us who've posted, and the generic "Ubuntu bugs."

Is there noone else having this problem?
Perhaps it is screen-resolution (e.g. widescreen) dependent.

Hi folks,

sorry for all these inconviniences, but at the moment I have really no time to code on D3lphin because of personal issues :-(

So here my serious appeal to the package maintainer not to use D3lphin in this state for Kubuntu 8.04 LTS as default file manager, because the KDE 4 Dolphin is more stable, less buggy, has more features and is better to use. Maybe you can use that one.

If one wants to help with D3lphin, send me a mail and I can give you SVN access, maybe there are people with more time than me. Still wondering if it was a good idea to take over maintaining of D3lphin :-( Sorry.

Best regards,
Marcel Juhnke

So there's no chance this split-view thing will get fixed until Kubuntu comes with KDE4? I don't know the details, but it doesn't seem like a huge thing to fix, is it?

that's why konqueror should be set back as default filer manager, dolphin is not stable/fixed enough for the next kubuntu release.

Actually, although I really prefer Dolphin to Konqueror, I vaguely agree with steph_Z. The people who want Dolphin will probably get the KDE4 variant of Hardy, anyway. And a file manager is rather critical to the whole platform, so we should really have a default that is actively maintained.

That said, it's no big deal. D3lphin works quite well, on the whole, and Konqueror is still there if people do want to use it.

I can confirm that I saw this problem on 2 Gutsy Kubuntu installs and one of them was just upgraded to Hardy beta yesterday and I still see the split info bar resize problem. Dolphin seems pretty slick, but who's maintaining it now? Anyone?

Hi Marcel, I would like to talk to you about helping on D3lphin. I was gonna send you an email but couldn't find your address anywhere. Please reply if you read this, or if someone knows how to contact Mr. Juhnke directly, please let me know. Thanks in advance.

And by the way, I've fixed this bug. Can you please tell me where/how to release the patch? This is my first time contributing a bug fix, and it's my first time working on an open source project, so please excuse me if I ask stupid or redundant questions :)

The KDE4 version of Dolphin which is being used by default in Intrepid doesn't have this bug. :)

I will still have the choice of KDE 3 in Intrepid right?

Is this bug fixed for KDE 3? Because right now, it is not.

That's great for the KDE4 people on the next release months from now, but ... what about everyone else?
