Hmm, I do get visual when I press "alt" + "arrow right" to switch to tty2. So Linux does boot, it's just the console that is screwed up.
If I then login and do:
vi /etc/default/grub -> remove the "splash" kernel option update-grub
The problem goes away.
Only occurs on systems installed with the netboot version, server CD version works fine without this modification.
