Bug Description

Kubuntu 12.04.1 64bit
Cups 1.5.3-0ubuntu4
EPSON WF-7520 - epson-inkjet-printer 1.0.0-1lsb3.2 - the last driver from Epson.
Connected via USB.

The printer just stopped to print - every job added in "stopped" state and this error:
"/opt/epson-inkjet-printer-201115w/cups/lib/filter/epson_inkjet_printer_filter failed"

The printer screen says "Printing" endless.

Will happy to provide additional info to resolve this issue.

After submitting earlier today an on-line support form about this issue on the Epson USA site, I just received this reply:
"Please be advised that we do not support our printers with the type of operating system that you're using. Linux drivers for Epson products are supplied by Avasys Corporation.
Note: Neither Epson nor Avasys provide support for Linux drivers."

Just to clarify my current state - I can't print from my Kubuntu.

I cannot reproduce the bug, but I have a newer version of the driver: epson-inkjet-printer-201115w 1.0.1-1lsb3.2. Please do a system update and check whether your package gets updated via the command:

dpkg -l | grep epson

If this does not happen, remove your print queue(s) for this printer and uninstall the driver:

dpkg -P epson-inkjet-printer-201115w

Then unplug the USB cable of the printer and re-plug it. If the printer does not get set up automatically, start system-config-printer to set up the printer and let it auto-download Epson's driver.

Does your printer work now?

The official download page below still offer the old 1.0.0 version:

system-config-printer
The program 'system-config-printer' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
apt-get install system-config-printer-gnome

The above result probably because of the fact I am on Kubuntu.

An additional info I am not sure the reason of - via the cups interface and via "system settings" -> "printer configuration", the printer appears still with old driver info.

Now, the print job added to the cups interface in "stopped" state.
Also the printer doesn't do any anything (no sound at all) after printing document.
The "On" light not blinking.

Before the last changes it was different - the printer do sounds, like it's going to start print (maybe some self tests) and then the original error was appeared. The "On" light was blinking until powering off.

Epson has done a move of the driver hosting from Avasys to their own servers, perhaps this happened between the 1.0.0 and 1.0.1 vertsions of your driver, leading to automatic update not working on this transition and the 1.0.1 not being available at Avasys.

system-config-printer is currently the only printer setup tool with a client for printer driver auto-download from OpenPrinting. I have tested the auto-download and it actually downloads the 1.0.1 version from Epson's servers. If you do not want to install system-config-printer (which can pull in a larger amount of dependencies) you can easily manually download all auto-downloadable drivers via the OpenPrinting web site:

http://www.openprinting.org/
http://www.openprinting.org/drivers/
http://www.openprinting.org/driver/epson-201115w/

Click on the link for the DEB package for your system's architecture (32-bit or 64-bit) and the Software Center will pop up allowing you to download and install the driver via an "Install" button. An old version of this driver will be replaced by the installation and old print queues will get appropriately updated for the use of the new driver.

If you set up a print queue with any printer setup tool now, the new driver will get used for the queue.

Looking at the error_log, the results are singularly unhelpful - just that the epson driver filter exited with status 1 but nothing is logged by the filter to say what it is doing...

You might try:

    cupsctl LogLevel=debug2

and print something; perhaps the Epson driver is writing something as an INFO message - debug2 will capture that...

Epson driver just does not work. I tried Ubuntu 14.04 with all available drivers, i always got filter error. If you try to call the filter from bash it says: "no such file or directory". I compiled the filter myself, then a cammand line call gave me "insufficient options" which looked promising, but the filter did not work. Unfortunately there is zero documentation for the filter, so i could not get it to spit out a log, althoug the source code has some debugging code. Openprinting.org gives information that is just a lie. This printer driver does not work. As last resort i chose "turboprint", a 30 EUR software which is not GPL but at least worked perfectly from the beginning. Even printing PDF files on a DVD surface on an Epson XP-750 works perfectly. I am running turboprint on a dedicated print server on Ubuntu 14.04 without X, this works perfectly, not the driver provided by epson.

There is a regression on 16.04. I don't think it's a duplicate of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lsb/+bug/840998: that was caused by a broken symlink to /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/ld-2.23.so; this is not the case.
