--uninstalled the incorrect 815 driver using terminal--
1.) downgrading drivers - instead of installing nvidia 815 drivers as recommended by the "Harderware Drivers", I have installed the correct driver Nvidia 9.40
2.) manually adding the EDID.bin file to my xorg.conf
