Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

When Buntu is loged on and desktop need to show up I just see white blank screen and my cursor. That has appeared after I tick "Turn On" at "Monitor Effects (or something like that)" Now I'm just seeing blank screen (all white), no icons, no wallpaper...nothing. The only thing I could see is my cursor and I can move it well. So the computer is stil working, but I could see nothing where to click. And if I hit "turn off" or "restart" as blind, I recognize that computer is working property. If you could help me, I'll appreciate it. Thanks

That's all information I could offer right now. And I don't know how to try to run that command 'apport-collect -p compiz 488881' from the terminal. If there are some steps write please.

pecemkd, the "Terminal" is a program that you can find in "Accessories" under your start menu. The "Terminal" is a simple text program that offers a "command prompt" much like the old style DOS computers did a long time ago.

Enter the above command (without the quotes) and press enter. Follow any instructions it gives you. When you are finished with it, you can close it out like any other program (File -> Exit).

Thus doesnot happen before the log-in screen so I presume it is a problem when compiz loads

Horace, because you will likely have a different hardware from the origiinal reporter, it would probably be best to file a new bug report against compiz. In the summary for your new report, you can mention this bug report, which would be helpful to us.

Dear WeatherGod, I really appriciate your help, but as I told you in the bug information, my screen is blank. So how could I find where "Accessories" is? There must be any step before buntu loged on, I mean something like BIOS in windows, where I could resolve this problem, because when buntu is loged on I'm blind, the screen is all white.

pecemkd and horace, I apologize. I should have realized the difficulty in having you run that command...

At the login screen, you will see an option at the bottom to choose which desktop mode you want to log in as. The default mode is "Gnome", but you should be able to choose "Gnome-failsafe". Try that to see if you are able to log in so that you can run the command.

Horace, be sure to file a new bug.

Hi Thanks for your help. I am using a Sony Vaio CW1 and have now resolved the issue by

--uninstalled the incorrect 815 driver using terminal--

1.) downgrading drivers - instead of installing nvidia 815 drivers as recommended by the "Harderware Drivers", I have installed the correct driver Nvidia 9.40

2.) manually adding the EDID.bin file to my xorg.conf

I found the solution on the below forum:

A lot of the time it is NOT a bug with compiz but only to do with your graphics card config...
