I discovered that if I turn off compiz (set fancy effects to None) within about 30 sec of booting up from the LiveCD, everything becomes completely stable, and any screen corruption disappears. This means that I can post results from Xorg.0.log and 'dmesg'. Hopefully those will be relevant to the problem even with compiz disabled. I'll try and post them later today.
