Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-radeon

After upgrading to Jaunty I am experiencing random freezes. I am assigning it to the xorg radeon driver because when it happens I am not doing anything else but scrolling, swapping windows or desktops, and other similar stuff.
The (default) xorg.conf using the EXA architecture is too slow for a normal usage (even w.o. compiz, which I am not interested in), so I tried EXA with "greedy" migration heuristics and XAA - with the same result: the system eventually locks itself up.

It is interesting that after this freeze I cannot just reboot: I have to shut down the computer, remove the power cable and batteries, plug everything again, and then I can start. Otherwise it just does not even reach the GRUB menu. (If you are going to tell me I need a new laptop - yes I agree; I am selecting one, but in the meantime this is what I have!)

I am running Ubuntu 9.04 with kernel 2.6.28-12-generic #43-Ubuntu. The radeon driver version is

xserver-xorg-video-radeon:
  Installed: 1:6.12.1-0ubuntu2
  Candidate: 1:6.12.1-0ubuntu2
  Version table:
 *** 1:6.12.1-0ubuntu2 0
        500 http://archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

and lspci -vvnn is attached.
