i have the same problem
sudo checkinstall gives:
ERROR: ld.so: object '/usr/lib/installwatch.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored.

installwatch is under '/usr/lib/installwatch/installwatch.so'

now checkinstall is unusable. its very annoying
