There is a workaround for this problem:
download checkgmail.patch
https://sourceforge.net/tracker/download.php?group_id=137480&atid=738663&file_id=423104&aid=3406322
then
sudo apt-get install patch
sudo patch /usr/bin/checkgmail /PATH/TO/checkgmail.patch

replacing /PATH/TO with the correct path to the patch file you downloaded.
