"I am marooned in the Unity session, how can I now log out to select for instance the Classic session?"
I generally just Alt + SysReq + K to accomplish the same thing. Then login as ubuntu, select desired session, and enter no password.
I only happened to stumble upon this because of recent comments at bug 657086 which I don't think is really related to this.
OT but I commonly use classic w/o effects due to my poor eyesight, when you can't see well familiarity is a good thing ;^)
