casper (1.263) natty; urgency=low

  [ Evan Dandrea ]
  * Suppress Log Out item in the live session (LP: #750140).

  [ Martin Pitt ]
  * scripts/casper-helpers, find_cow_device(): Do not ever probe floppy
devices. There are lots of computers which still have a floppy controller
(and thus a /dev/fd0), but no actual floppy. Trying to send anything to
/dev/fd0 will result in very long timeouts. Here this causes booting the
live CD to take more than 30 minutes. (See also LP #539515 for the
corresponding bug in udev/udisks). (LP: #739774)

I am marooned in the Unity session, how can I now log out to select for instance the Classic session? The logout option was very helpful for this.

Why do you say that? You can just log in again.

I generally just Alt + SysReq + K to accomplish the same thing. Then login as ubuntu, select desired session, and enter no password.

I only happened to stumble upon this because of recent comments at bug 657086 which I don't think is really related to this.

OT but I commonly use classic w/o effects due to my poor eyesight, when you can't see well familiarity is a good thing ;^)

Just having another look at this to refresh my memory. I've gotten so used to using Alt + SysReq + K that I needed to check more closely.

There is now an option to; Switch from ubuntu. But it doesn't work :^(

It returns me to the login screen but changing DE's does nothing - or at least not going to classic w/o effects. Even after selecting classic w/o effects I get Unity.

Although using Alt + SysReq + K works as expected.

I hope that's helpful. I'll try to follow up in case you want me to file a new bug report about "Switch from ubuntu" not working properly.

BTW I'm using the actual Beta 2 i386 CD. now wishing I'd checked out the daily.

Screenshot attached.

Yes, please report a separate bug on "Switch From ubuntu" (that wording is highly unfortunate anyway).

I said I had no way to log in again, because I had no way of telling what the password was. It didn't even occur to me that just pressing Enter would work. :-)

Thanks Matthew, new report is bug 766071.

Actually the logout option was, (and could be), quite useful in a live session, particularly from a "try me" perspective.
Users may want to ck. hardware support, some of which is only available from additional drivers and then requires a log out and in to load,
The nouveau 3d drivers for nvidia is one clear example, users should be presented with a clearer way to ck. support and be able to preview the unity shell itself.
The same may also apply to some wireless hardware

In that regard the log out option with username ubuntu, no password, is a bit more obvious than a 4 key combo than many won't know about.
The fact that add. drivers erroneously prompts for a restart when it's not required for the nouveau 3d drivers, while another issue, should not be factor in removing this option.
(Honestly, the "try me" experience could use some improvement in this area

summary: - "Log Out" is unhelpfully available in live session

I'm testing the Oneiric Alpha 3 iso-testing image (20110803-i386) and taking into account bug 815077 this is particularly troublesome because one need now choose logout and then restart from the upper right hand corner of the login screen.

Not sure renaming this bug was a good idea though, if a new bug needs filed just shout.

Some will not be aware of magic key combos and/or cli options to reboot :^)

Logout is back in 20110803.1-i386 live session but please re comment #7 in bug 815077.

Sorry for any confusion but once we get to the 4th or 5th builds during an iso-testing cycle my brain begins to show it's age ;^)
