I had same issue. Mine was a phantom DVD that was removed but not unmounted.
Ubuntu 9.10 x64

Would be nice if Brasero check permissions (for the root issue) and check for conflicting filesystems (phantom mounted image).
Then it could either fix the issue or at least warn people to check these things.
