I'm having the same problem, usually after running an NX session remotely to my workstation. I come in the next day, & my screen saver is locked. A hard reset is the only thing that will allow me to get back in. In messages I see:

bonobo-activation-server (jcenter-31686): could not associate with desktop session: Failed to connect to socket /tmp/dbus-GjZOjel1tD: Connection refused

I'm running Ubuntu 9.04.
