This bug appears to be related to another bug I've seen, where the "Applications" column in the "Tasks" tab in Advanced View shows boxes with X in them (null bytes?) after the application name. I grabbed the latest version of BOINC from boinc.berkeley.edu and no longer get error messages or Application column weirdness, so I theorize that this bug is fixed in 6.2.15.
Would be nice if Ubuntu would upgrade to 6.2.15, then...
