It turns out this was only happening for me with .m4a files. I found the following at http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?p=1522863 which fixed the problem for me:
"If anyone else is having a problem like this, you can try deleting $HOME/.gstreamer-0.10/registry.x86_64.bin (then quit/restart any gstreamer apps that are having issues)."
