I've tried Michael.S.G.'s suggestion and can confirm that clicking on Now Playing *before* playing a video stops Banshee from crashing.

Banshee 1.6 Beta 3 (1.5.2) / Ubuntu 9.10 (32-bit with Compiz enabled)
