Bug Description

Upgraded to oneiric with errors, the system is broken.
Whenever I try to install or reinstall packages I get debsums errors and can't perform the operation(see below). Moreover, since installing updates for banshee and firefox, they don't work anymore because they freeze on startup and eat %100 CPU!!! (See #830012 for banshee)

After the Partial Upgrade I did on the 24th of August (few minutes ago) the upgrade finished without any errors and Unity 3D is working. I got messages of programs closing unexpectedly: metacity, 2x gnome-settings-daemon and the GSettings Data Conversion. I will report these bugs in the meantime.

http://paste.ubuntu.com/674379/ is the verbose output from dist-upgrade. There is a lot of stuff, but this started happening when we moved the at-spi2-core recommends to a depends.

When doing "sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop" the upgrade actually removes all the obsolete at-spi/python-atspi packages, but a mere dist-upgrade rather removes ubuntu-desktop.

Is it really necessary for at-spi2-core to Conflicts: at-spi? Can the two be co-installed on upgrade, and be removed through the normal main -> universe demotion cleanup? If they are both installed, do bad things happen?

Martin, is there a way to fix our broken systems? or do we have to wipe out everything and reinstall ubuntu?

"sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop" should do the trick.

  * debian/control: Drop at-spi2-core conflicts to at-spi. This was meant for
cleaning up the old package, but confuses apt on upgrade to rather hold
back the old one than upgrading to the new one. (LP: #828759)

I managed to proceed by filtering on broken packages in synaptic and have those fixed through synaptic. After that the partial upgrade worked.

However I never attempted to reinstall packages and never noticed the debsums errors that you get. I only got the failure to upgrade ubuntu-desktop. So your mileage may vary.

brltty-x11 is installed on Natty as a recommend of ubuntu-desktop and depends on libatspi1.0-0 which holds back libatspi2.0-0 hence the resolver issue.

Reopening the report.

The brltty-x11 package shouldn't depend on legacy at-spi stuff, forgot that users would still have this installed on upgrade. Fixing now.

This bug was fixed 14 hours ago, it might be the updated package has not gotten to the mirrors yet.
The system is not instantaneous, even though we all want it to be. I would say this should be working within 48 hours. It should not be necessary to reinstall Oneiric to get the fix, just patience.

In my case at least, any apt update or installation terminates with errors (see the bug description) so I don't know if an update would work for me. As I mentioned earlier, updating working programs like firefox makes them (afterwards) freeze on startup(beacuse the any update terminates with error). I would be very thankful for any help.

I think my problem also belongs here. I updated my Toshiba Satellite laptop from Natty to Oneiric yesterday (22.10.2011) around noon. I got the missing dependencies error too. The upgrade finished, and I restarted the system. Since then I can't boot into the desktop. The usual option gives me a bunch of "no such file or directory" errors, starts bluetooth, wicd network manager, starts pulse-audio, says something about saned being disabled, checks battery status, gives [ok]-s and then hangs.
When I start the system in recovery consol mode and then choose "resume boot" (the options are in hungarian, so I don't know the proper name), I get the same errors and checks, but then it asks for my username and password and opens the command prompt. Typing startx gets me into the ubuntu desktop.
Somebody please help me make the system boot without the workaround. I also switched a personalized grub file for the package maintainers version. I had a few crashes, but for those I found the proper reports.

I also upgraded my work laptop. That one had Maverick on it. I upgraded to Natty and then went directly to Oneiric. That laptop had absolutely no problems and no crashes. It's an Asus laptop.
