Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

-------
Summary: Cant resize error window to read output. It only allows the reading of 3 lines at a time. (Screenshot at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/739647/+attachment/2107176/+files/ys7vJ.png)
-------
The window that Update Manager shows when an error happens is not resizable, which makes it very hard to read the error message. See attached screenshot.
-------
Some suggestions on how to improve the error dialog from a duplicate, bug #365972:
I think this dialog can be improved a few ways:
 - rather than just displaying 2 lines (of 12), display all tweleve
 - rather than just displaying as much as will fit horizontally, perhaps perform common string replacement and display things heirarchically?

e.g.

in this case the url might be:

 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/foo/main/binary-amd64/Packages
 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/foo/main/source/Sources
 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/foo-updates/restricted/binary-amd64/Packages

perhaps:

 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/
  foo/main/binary-amd64/Packages
  foo/main/source/Sources
  foo-updates/restricted/binary-amd64/Packages

instead?

Ok, the update looks good. Now run an upgrade and attach the output. The error should be in that output text.

sudo apt-get upgrade 2>&1 | tee ~/Desktop/Upgrade1

Sorry I missed your response.

Here's the output. As I mentioned, it's a huge error message that's difficult to read in the tiny error dialog. It would be great if the error dialog was resizable.

Thanks. Now run:

sudo apt-get clean

sudo apt-get upgrade 2>&1 | tee ~/Desktop/Upgrade2

And attach output file.

Ah, RedSingularity I think you're trying to help me fix the error. I apologize that my title was inappropriate. The error is probably because I was messing around with faezna's files. I'm not concerned with fixing it.

The bug is supposed to be about the error dialog. It reports an error in a tiny dialog that is too small to read the error and cannot be maximized. I've fixed the bug title.

I see. Ok, thanks for clarifying. I would like to test this out on my system then and have a look. Can you recommend a way of producing this event so I can see the error window in question? I will try and create an intentional error on my own, but if you have a way in mind, that would be a great help.

Reassigning to the aptdaemon package, as that is the package responsible for error dialog displayed on the screenshot.
