This issue also affected me. I thought I removed just the messaging applet (which I now know is just part of the indicator) and I inadvertently removed the volume control. Later when I noticed the volume control was missing, I tried searching in the "Add to Panel" window for "volume", "mixer" and "sound". Any of these should have brought up the indicator applet with a clear description of what it does.

Also, an idea, if the "Add to Panel" window is empty because of a search result, it should say something. Maybe "Nothing was found matching [whatever was typed]".

To go along with that, each of the applets could have a long description in addition to the short description they already have. If you click on or highlight an applet it could expand to show the long description. During a search if the list of matching applets is short enough to fit in the window, they could all display their long description. That way the in a situation like this, when someone searches for "sound" they would see the long description of the indicator which would say stuff about "sound/volume control" and what else the indicator does.
