I installed Ubuntu 12.04 yesterday and i had the exact same problem. Sound would only come from the front panel jacks where the headset was plugged in, but not from the back where the stereo amplifier was plugged in.
I also installed the ALSA devel (DKMS) modules but that didnt solve the problem (initially).
But: i later opened the alsamixer (in a terminal) and found that the "smart 5.1" entry was muted (scroll to the far right in the mixer, it was the last entry in my system). i unmuted it (pressing 'm' or 'o', sorry forgot which key) and then the backpanel jack was finally working.
so, i dont know if the new alsa modules are needed, i am not going to uninstall them now to check ... too lazy.
