Bug Description

Description:
In 11.10, my audio worked perfectly.
However, in 12.04, on my intel HD audio, I can only get output from the front panel headphones output. None of the outputs on the back panel work.

There are some unusual symptoms. For example, the "headphone" checkbox is always checked, and if I uncheck it, it mutes all sound (systray icon shows muted). Even if I mess with all sliders, muting and unmuting them, the back outputs won't work.

Attempts to fix, in no order:
-run from liveCD
-purge + reinstall alsa and pulseaudio
-all combinations of settings in alsa-mixer, pavucontrol, sound control panel
-disable + re-enable intel-hda in BIOS
-all suggestions on the soundtroubleshooting and hdaintal sound wiki pages:

I forgot to mention that under sound settings modes: there is no "headphones" settings, but there are all the other speaker output modes (duplex 4.0, 5.1, etc), and selecting any of these modes does not help.

I am happy to provide anything or run any tests.
Thanks!

Please try the latest ALSA module to see if this has been fixed upstream: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/UpgradingAlsa/DKMS

Dave,
I tried the ALSA snapshot and the problem still occurs.

I installed Ubuntu 12.04 yesterday and i had the exact same problem. Sound would only come from the front panel jacks where the headset was plugged in, but not from the back where the stereo amplifier was plugged in.

I also installed the ALSA devel (DKMS) modules but that didnt solve the problem (initially).

But: i later opened the alsamixer (in a terminal) and found that the "smart 5.1" entry was muted (scroll to the far right in the mixer, it was the last entry in my system). i unmuted it (pressing 'm' or 'o', sorry forgot which key) and then the backpanel jack was finally working.

so, i dont know if the new alsa modules are needed, i am not going to uninstall them now to check ... too lazy.

not sure if this helps your problem, but give it a try ......

Wk,
Thanks for the idea.
Unfortunately, i don't have a "smart 5.1" entry in my mixer. That's unusual because I am fairly sure it was there in 11.10.
