unplugging, then plugging back in the HDMI connector is my "work-around"
also. It's annoying, but also it's a quick temporary fix until the alsa
team has time to repair it. Another quick fix would be to use some external
speakers connected to the soundcard output plugs. But, HDMI worked with
release 11.10, so it must have gotten broken with release 12.04.
