Bug Description

I clicked on sound icon (upper right corner of screen in Unity), then sound settings, to test my soundcard as mostly, I'm not getting any sound. The only time it starts working, is when I do some update, and I notice in the log that an HDMI hot plug event has occured, then sound test is successful. Upon reboot, sound test fails again. Do you know of how I can do this "HDMI hot plug event" as a work around?

I'm running 12.04, gnome-shell installed, I have an ATI Radeon 3850 graphics card, HDMI from this to Vizio 47" TV/monitor should give me both sound & video (sometimes it does, Ubuntu 11.04 works) some lshw info:

I tried adding the following line to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
options snd-hda-intel model=6stack-digout

then, sudo alsa force-reload gives:
Unloading ALSA sound driver modules: snd-hda-codec-hdmi snd-hda-codec-realtek snd-hda-intel snd-hda-codec snd-hwdep snd-pcm snd-seq-midi snd-rawmidi snd-seq-midi-event snd-seq snd-timer snd-seq-device snd-page-alloc (failed: modules still loaded: snd-hda-codec-hdmi snd-hda-codec-realtek snd-hda-intel snd-hda-codec snd-hwdep snd-pcm snd-timer snd-page-alloc).

still no sound.

alsactl -v gives:
alsactl version 1.0.25

tried installing driver from AMD website: amd-driver-installer-12-2-x86.x86_64.run
still no sound.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think this can be closed. If I unplug my HDMI cable, and plug it back in the sound works. Doooough! HOMER!

I should not have to do this, so, I'm leaning towards this being a software bug.

Actually, my sound stops everytime the display (tv in this case) is off or change the channel. I do not have to reboot my computer, I just need to unplug and plug back my hdmi connector. By the way, my card is ATI RADEON HD 5400/6300 SERIES.

Thanks in advance.

unplugging, then plugging back in the HDMI connector is my "work-around"
also. It's annoying, but also it's a quick temporary fix until the alsa
team has time to repair it. Another quick fix would be to use some external
speakers connected to the soundcard output plugs. But, HDMI worked with
release 11.10, so it must have gotten broken with release 12.04.

I have the same problem. Everytime that I change the channel or turn off the monitor (TV) sound stops working. I found a work around so I do not need to unplugg the hdmi cable. I go to another console (ctrl + alt + F2) and then back to graphic mode (ctrl + alt F7) and the audio is back. This should not happen since it was working fine on 11.10. When I upgraded to 12.04 it started.

I noticed that the following messages apprear everytime that the sound is reconnedted.

[717978.563043] HDMI hot plug event: Codec=0 Pin=3 Presence_Detect=1 ELD_Valid=0
[717978.563069] HDMI status: Codec=0 Pin=3 Presence_Detect=1 ELD_Valid=1

I am using ati radoen HD 6450 card on a phentom quad processor system with Kubuntu 12.04 as OS.

I hope someone can fix this problem.

Thanks
