It looks like this fix is already implemented upstream and will be supported correctly in the next Ubuntu release. You can verify this by using the procedure here: http://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/UpgradingAlsa/DKMS

(To support it in the current release, 11.10, we need to send a patch to the ubuntu kernel-team mailinglist with a specific format.)
