I tried installing linux-alsa-driver-modules-generic (24.201007620500) from that PPA. Rebooted. This, unfortunately, made the problem worse:
1) neither front nor back audio jack produced sound output.
2) On opening the sound applet -> preferences, the only device shown under the "hardware" tab was the RS780 Azalia HDMI controller. Previous to installing this package, the sound applet would list two hardware devices: the RS780 as above, and an "Internal audio, Analog Stereo output". This internal analog device is what I had selected in order to get the front jacks to work.
I removed the package, and rebooted. The behavior has returned as before: no audio from the rear jack, but audio from the front headphone jack.
Thanks for your help - please let me know if there is anything else I can provide to help debug this.
