I don't believe this is specific to acroread. I do not have that package installed at all and am experiencing the issue. Fix in #10 works for me. So, unless there is another package also providing the same conflicting _filedir() (which I was not able to find by grepping /etc/bash_completion.d/*) then the bug is specific to bash-completion. Running Oneiric, FWIW.
