If you want to select a word of text, you could do SHIFT-CTRL-CURSOR_KEY. It's a very common shortcut, but in the version 3.0.0-4ubuntu1 of the package abiword, this combo doesn't work anymore (it worked in previous versions).
The bug has been already reported here: http://bugzilla.abisource.com/show_bug.cgi?id=13596 and it was solved too with a patch fix ( http://bugzilla.abisource.com/attachment.cgi?id=5695&action=view ).
