Bad encoded strings on k3b spanish castilian localization

Some strings on the spanish castilian localization of k3b seems to be wrongly encoded with iso8859-1, when they should be in utf-8.

I am the translator of K3b into spanish and also a Kubuntu user. I can confirm this bug in Lucid. The original .po files with the translations are ok (with UTF-8), and if I use msgftm to generate the .mo files, the translations in the screens are shown pertfectly.
This bug does not happen in other distributions, like Suse, so is a problem of Kubuntu packaging.

I see the issue when looking at https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/maverick/+source/k3b/+pots/k3b/es/+translate?start=0&batch=10&show=changed_in_launchpad&field.alternative_language=&field.alternative_language-empty-marker=1&old_show=all

I do not know the cause, but an easy solution is to review all those translations and choose the "Packaged" version, as I see that in most of the cases it is the correct one. You can also manually fetch the translation from upstream and upload it as "Imported translation" at https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/maverick/+source/k3b/+pots/k3b/es/+upload

After that, upstream translations will be tracked and given precedence again:

One way to test it is to:

1. Go to:

https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/lucid/+source/k3b/+pots/k3b/es/+export

(change 'lucid' in the URL for 'maverick' if you are using Maverick)

2. Choose 'MO Format' in the 'Format:' combo box

3. Press the 'Request Download' button

4. When you receive the e-mail with a link to the .mo file, copy that
file to /usr/share/locale-langpack/es/LC_MESSAGES/

5. Start k3b and check if the problem is solved.

You don't need any special permissions to request the download, so
anyone with a Launchpad account can test this.

Thank you David for your explanation, but my problem is not whit the procedure that I know. My problem is that I am working with an equipment not mine and I have not the possibilitie to install k3b. I hope tomorrow I will be able to test in my own computer, but now...

I have tried the k3b.mo file from https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/lucid/+source/k3b/+pots/k3b/es/+export and following instructions to copy this file to LC_MESSAGES directory, it works, after copying it to its location, the accented spanish characters appears well coded in k3b gui.

Thanks for fixing it.

Could this fix be added to security lucid updates?

It seems that this was fixed in Launchpad, and that a new language pack containing these fixes was uploaded to lucid-proposed for testing a while ago, but no one had the chance to actually provide feedback and thus get it promoted to lucid-updates and released for all users.

Could someone perhaps do the following steps to check out the fix is already available, so that we can release it?:

* Enable the Lucid proposed repository (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed)
* Follow the tests on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Translations/LanguagePackUpdatesQA#Kubuntu
* Check out that the strings in k3b have been fixed
* Provide feedback of the outcome as a comment on this bug
