I was unable to reproduce this problem.

Testing Environment:
- Jaunty (9.04) x86_32, running the same basic system/kernel described in your bug report.[0]
- Using the current version of Pidgin (found in the standard repositories), originally provided by the default Ubuntu installation (w/ security updates, etc). [1]
- A preexisting Yahoo Instant Messenger account, which was successfully added to Pidgin. See [2] below.

================

****EDIT: I'm unclear whether you're having this problem *only* in Pidgin, or in other IM clients as well. (This is my fault; I originally misread the bug report. To wit:

- - -

I may have misinterpreted this bug report altogether -- after testing Pidgin (see [2] below) without running into any problems, I came back and noticed this (qtd from OP):

> it just staying idle and no error message is displaying
> im *unable* to login into yahoo n other IM's too [my emphasis]

I originally (mis)read this bug as "I can't log into Yahoo with Pidgin, but other (yahoo) IM clients work just fine." (If, by some fluke, that *IS* what you meant to say, see the [2] below.)

- - -

However: If that's not a typo -- ie, you can't seem to connect to Yahoo with *any* IM clients -- then kindly provide some additional info:

1. What causes you to suspect Pidgin (and not one of the other IM clients you tried) as the root cause of this issue? Is it possible that this is more of a "Trouble Connecting to Yahoo Messenger Accounts in General" kind of bug?

2. You said you've tried other IM clients, but have you tried to log in (on that same system) using a different Yahoo account? In other words, are *all* Yahoo clients unable to connect, or is it just one account in particular?

3. Can you successfully connect (with the same Yahoo account) on other machines, under Windows, etc? In other words, are you having this problem (with your Yahoo account) *everywhere*, or only when using Ubuntu on this machine?

- - -

To better understand your problem, please post back with answers to these questions (1,2,3, above) -- and please feel free to add any other relevant details you think might be important or useful in diagnosing your problem. Thanks!

[2] To test, I opened Pidgin, added a new account as described below, and was able to connect/chat/IM a quick "testing 123" message to a friend, receive a reply, etc. Nothing unexpected happened; no obvious errors occurred.

Specifically:

(i. ) I opened Pidgin, clicked "Accounts", "Manage Accounts," and then "Add."
(ii.) I setup my (previously existing) Yahoo account with the following options/config:

sreekanth:

After reading your response, it seems clear to me that this is not a Pidgin-specific issue. (Rationale: On the same machine, you continued to experience the same problem, even when attempting to connect via other, non-pidgin/purple IM clients.)

It also seems unlikely that this is an issue specific to the Yahoo Instant Messenger protocol(s), but instead just a general "problem" with getting instant messaging (of any kind) working properly. (Rationale: On the same system, you were also unable to connect using a Google Talk / Jabber account, so it's not just YIM.)

I know this must be frustrating for you; especially since you (ostensibly) have Ubuntu up and running to the point where you can email, access the web, file bug reports, etc... so it's not like one of those "I can't connect to the Internet/network at all" kinds of problems, which seem to be a bit easier to diagnose.

It crossed my mind to have you describe your home network setup, check your router or broadband modem (or both) and make sure the necessary ports are open, etc, but frankly, I can't think of any obvious reason why your router would *block* IM (when you're using Ubuntu) while working perfectly when you (re)boot back into Windows.

So, long story short, I'd hate to keep asking you for information (making you jump through various hoops, etc) without knowing what I'm looking for -- and it's obvious you need a larger (smarter!) group of people, with a broader understanding of general "IM troubleshooting" on Ubuntu, so we can get you up and running sooner rather than later.

I'm converting this bug report to a Question, which will hopefully result in more people looking at it, helping, etc. This seems like the best way to get your question to the right person -- also, this will remove your report from the "Bugs filed against Pidgin" list/queue, where it (probably) does not actually belong.

You should be able to follow along with the progress of this Question without having to change anything on your end -- but to be honest, you're my first "Bug to Question Convert" so I'll stay subscribed here (Bug #433515) just in case you need help finding the new item, or I screw up and transfer you over to Never-Never Land, etc. :)

Please also feel free to contract me directly (just click on my username in Launchpad) if you have trouble navigating to the correct area. I'll do my best to help shepherd this issue (and you!) along the path until we can find someone better equipped to assist. Thanks!

Well, apologies for all the superfluous "status changes" back and forth, above. I'm getting a weird "timeout" error with Launchpad when I try to convert this bug to a question.

I'm going to hop on IRC and find someone to help explain what I'm doing wrong.
