As weird as it may sound, the problem was caused by my HP LaserJet 1020 printer. After unplugging it from my PC, there's no more problems; no freezing, no text mode boot messages, just a normal, blazing fast boot sequence. So mamamel, if you still have that problem, try unplugging anything USB other than your mouse and keyboard, and tell us about the results.
