Having this same problem on Ubuntu 10.10 running on Sony Vaio VGN-Z590 in Intel graphics mode.

Happens on resume from sleep about 1 out of 5 times.

Also happens on cold boot if previously booted Windows or previously booted in Nvidia graphics mode. (This is not surprising due to the way Sony customized the hardware.)

Did not have this problem with Ubuntu 10.04.
