Bug Description

I've just done a fresh install of Kubuntu Intrepid on my Acer Travelmate 530.

The problem I have now is the screen randomly goes black and a single line of text saying "Checking Battery State [OK]" appears at the top for a few seconds, then X restarts and I am left at the login screen.

The crashing occurs whether I'm on mains power or battery.

I've done a full update & upgrade & dist-upgrade, but that didn't help.

I've also turn on proposed updates, and re-upgraded, also to no effect.

I know that its not a hardware issue, as before Intrepid I was a happy Gutsy and Hardy user on this same laptop, (and Dual boot XP works fine as well).

At least one other person has the same bug.

I'm new to linux but I'm thinking it may be some kind of memory issue. It doesn't matter what application I'm using when this happens, it just does if a program (especially more than one) is running. I can leave the system on for hours without a problem, but if I open folders, applications, a browser, etc., it goes down.

My "solution" was to use Ubuntu with the Blubuntu theme on that laptop.
IMHO not as good as Kubuntu but living with this bug was not an option...

KDE appears to just not work with Ubuntu.  I dumped Kubuntu, installed Ubuntu and everything was great; used the package manager to download the Kubuntu desktop and run that as a session option and the same thing happened again.  But when I boot using the Gnome session type it runs fine.  So there we go.

I am running a fresh install of ubuntu with gnome on my toshiba satellite, first with karmic, then with lucid since last week. If I get your comments right, this bug should not affect me. But it does. I never had that problem with the same configuration on my old vaio nor my desktop. It is so annoying and definitely not an option to live with. Any suggestions are welcome.

I had this problem on all my home computers 1pc, 1laptop and 1netbook.
I realized that xinit works ok but executing any gtk programm throws undefined symbol g_malloc_n and something about libgdk-x11-2.....
So googling I found that there was obsolete libraries on /usr/local/lib that shadows good libraries in /usr/lib

this gives you which: ldd libgdk-x11-2.0.so.0 | grep local

Moving that to another place solved the problem.
I don't know what package caused this problem but I think is repositories bug

Having this same problem on Ubuntu 10.10 running on Sony Vaio VGN-Z590 in Intel graphics mode.

Happens on resume from sleep about 1 out of 5 times.

Also happens on cold boot if previously booted Windows or previously booted in Nvidia graphics mode. (This is not surprising due to the way Sony customized the hardware.)

Did not have this problem with Ubuntu 10.04.
