Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1509578/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

It might be just my hard drive that is giving me the problem.

I'm having the same problem with my Dell Inspiron 15z. It won't boot after upgrading from 15.04 to 15.10. It halts with

dell_smm_hwmon: unable to get SMM Dell Signature

at regular bootup.

When I select recovery mode from the GRUB menu I can get to a root prompt. None of the other recovery options work. I can do a

mount -o rw,remount /dev/sda5

And that works fine. But any attempt to start networking or almost anything results in something about a dell_smm_hwmon error and the system hangs hard. Ctrl-C, Ctrl-Z, and Ctrl-Alt-Del all do nothing.

I cannot seem to determine which package this is regarding. The kernel? Some dell-based module? I've looked online and see nothing.

Wouldn't mind getting a work-around so the system will function again...

I have a Dell Inspiron 530. With NVIDIA graphics card. I upgraded my Ubuntu 14.04 to 16.04. I get the same message at boot up. Then takes me to the login page. I am not sure what the issue is. The message that see on my screen is like this this

lvmetab is not active yet. using direct activation during sysinit
/dev/mapper/ubuntu--vg-root clean, 556552/15114240 files, 19273330/60437504 blocks
[ 21.750132] dell_smm_hwmon: unable to get SMM Dell signature.

I am not sure if the above message is one issue or two. But I see this message on screen every time I boot it.

Hi all...

I'm currently working on a Dell Inspiron 531s and am receiving the same error message (dell_smm_hwmon: unable to get SMM Dell signature) as Suman Mummaneni above. I just installed a fresh copy of Lubuntu 16.04 64 bit on this system from DVD. The workaround mentioned here...

https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2332953

did not work for me. At the same time, I would like to avoid using any workarounds that potentially disable services or features. I would like to request that this issue be investigated and a patch released. If you need any additional information while I still have this system (which might not be long,) please feel free to ask. Thank you! :)

Regards...

Just like the above user Aaron Durland, I'm also using a Dell Inspiron 531s (which is now about 9 years old!) and have just started getting the above error. This is almost certainly related to my recent installation of an SSD disk into this old machine, which has only ever had regular HDDs before. The above workaround mentioned DID work for me, although the bootup sequence from cold isn't as fast as I would have expected after this upgrade.

Still happens with my Ubuntu Jammy Jellyfish on a Dell G15 5511 running a fresh 5,17.1 kernel. I think the problem is related to dell-smm-hwmon module. I can't load this module in my machine. I think it needs change to support G15 series and XPS series as reported before.

Occurring here as well. Dell Precision 9960 17. If the error did disappear in OEM mode, it's likely a driver issue.

Found this, seems pertinent:

https://docs.kernel.org/hwmon/dell-smm-hwmon.html

Seems to imply a custom kernel option needs to be set at compile time.
