Following Straximus's lead (https://bugs.launchpad.net/mythbuntu/+bug/1308105/comments/18), I downgraded to the xfce4-settings package from Saucy. I left the machines allow all weekend long, and this morning the video on both machines worked as expected.

There is a regression bug between xfce4-settings 4.11.0-1ubuntu1 (saucy) and 4.11.2-1ubuntu2 (trusty).
