This is still present in Xubuntu 16.04.1 LTS

I am using something very similar to last poster, embededd intel graphics driver.

I have this motherboard: ASROCK Q9000
asrock.com/mb/Intel/Q1900-ITX/?cat=Specifications

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Atom Processor Z36xxx/Z37xxx Series Graphics & Display (rev 0e)

I am also connected to a Sony TV, but I am using the DVI output with HDMI to DVI cable.

Switching to the virtual terminal 1 with alt+f1 works and I can restart lightdm from there and everything works, once I do.
