This affects me too. I have a Radeon HD 7970/8970 OEM / R9 280X and the display is a Samsung U28D590D. The display disconnects on entering standby or when manually switched off. Siwtching manually to tty1 before switching the display on again solves this sometimes but is not reliable and not a usable solution.
