Just got the Meltdown update to kernel linux-image-4.4.0-108-generic but this doesnt boot at all. It just hangs after grub. There is no logs from syslog or such. SysReq Keys dont work neither.

Achim Behrens,

Is the kernel that fails really 104? Or is that your backup that you just booted into to report the problem?

The one that fails for me is the new one, 108. It just "panics" nearly instantaneously.

Hi - just did update and also had issue where boot failed to progress - bit hard to tell what was happening as the HDMI video had not come up at that point. had to revert to 4.4.0-104. Running on Intel NUC Celeron(R) CPU 847.

Hi, Just did an update this morning to 4.4.0-108-generic and the boot failed to process. I restarted the system and entered the Grub screen where I received advance options to login. I am though able to login with 4.4.0-104-generic. I am not proficient in Ubuntu commands. If you want I can run the commands and share the screenshots.

Same here on a HP Microserevr Gen8, Celeron CPU G1610T. There seem to be problems in other distro's as well, a collegue informed me. F.I. 4.14.12 Debian (package naam 4.14.0-3) can't compile Nvideo modules etc., etc.

I had the same issue as described above. Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS updated from 4.4.0.104 to 4.4.0.108, boot fails. No video display. Reboot again with 4.4.0.104 works.

I'm having the same problem, no boot with 108, works fine with 104, on a machine with Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-5820K CPU @ 3.30GHz and NVDIA proprietary drivers. The boot process stops almost immediately.

I took a picture of the kernel error message (attached), apologies for the poor quality, but it is the best I could manage.

I can verify 4.4.0-108.131 panics on a Dell Poweredge R630 (Xeon E5-2630) and a Fujitsy Primergy TS140S2 (Xeon E3-1220) and my home server (Core i5-4670), exactly as described on comment #4 by Alexis.

On the Fujitsu Primergy server linux-image-4.4.0-108-generic_4.4.0-108.131~lp1741934_amd64.deb (ref comment #3) runs fine, i.e. it does not panic.

@3 i will try your kernel builds right now. I cant take a screenshot since there is just a blank screen.

@4 i did run ubuntu-bug on the booting kernel, which is the older one.

I just saw Dell offering a Bios/Uefi update. I will flash that after trying the test-kernel from @3

It show all usb pendrives as write-protected, while with the older kernel they do work. i will open another bug for this, when i can reboot to that kernel again.

No way to reboot, even from a network boot.
I can log in rescue, which runs a different kernel in my case (OVH) 4.14.12-mod-std-ipv6-64-rescue

I'm still having problems even with 4.4.0-109. This is running Ubuntu Mate 16.04 on an Intel Core i5-3570K with onboard graphics and luks disk encryption. Although the system gets a little farther than it did with 4.4.0-108, the password screen comes up in low resolution mode and does not respond to keyboard input, apparently crashed. So for now I'm back to running 4.4.0-104.

It's working now. Previously I had uninstalled, but not purged, the 4.4.0-108 kernel. I purged the remains and reinstalled 4.4.0-109, everything appears to be OK now running the new kernel.

Having the same problem with you. But now it's working. Thanks for the tips. For those of you having the same problem with me and Carter Braxton (low resolution in 4.4.0-109 kernel). You need to PURGE all 4.4.0-108 kernel image and the remaining HEADERS. Use command: sudo apt autoremove
