I've found a solution for this bug in Ubuntu 10.04. Simply, change the boot splash screen as follows:
1. Open terminal and run:
> sudo cp /usr/share/applications/gnome-appearance-properties.desktop /usr/share/gdm/autostart/LoginWindow
2. Log out.
3. You’ll see an «Appearance window» pop up. Change it to how you prefer it, then close it and login as usual.
4. When you've logged, run this command:
> sudo unlink /usr/share/gdm/autostart/LoginWindow/gnome-appearance-properties.desktop
