The previous description suggested that brackets, quotes, and sentences should be completed with separate double spaces, and therefore that completed periods should always go outside quotes. This is common amongst software developers such as myself, and in en-UK; but in en-US, a following comma/period should go inside the quote, even if it doesn't strictly belong to the quote.

Partly because some locales don't use strict nesting, and partly because it's just more convenient, everything unclosed should be closed together with the period.
