Bug Description

Take a look at the screenshot in bug #863501 or at the one attached. Both have examples of the Ubuntu Mono and Terminus. Examples in the former one are rendered by GIMP (font size = 18), while examples in the latter one are rendered by gnome-terminal (font size = 11).
As it can be seen, in both cases the Terminus font has nice sharply defined form, while Ubuntu Mono is over-antialiased.

Note: that the appearance depends on the rendering mode. If Ubuntu Mono is rendered as hinted black-and-white (a work-in-progress) then you get output similar to the high-contrast to the bitmap-only rendering mode of Terminus.

BTW: in the font testing beta team PPA, there's a package named 'fonts-ubuntu-font-family-console' which contains black-and-white 8x16 bitmap rendering for the Linux console. These can be loaded with 'setfont'. They're not ideal, and Vincent Connare at Dalton Maag is still working on them.

Ah, I've just fount that terminus uses bitmaps for all the font-sizes. I don't want to argue on the same behavior :), but IMHO such high contrast is the one of main grounds for it is used as a main font for coding.

I would be interested to see survey results for which monospace fonts coders use on Ubuntu. Without those, however, I highly doubt the suggestion that they prefer bitmap fonts over anti-aliased ones. That might have been true in the 1980s and 1990s when low resolutions made anti-aliasing a mess, but not today.

As long as anti-aliasing is standard in non-bitmap fonts, any problems with anti-aliasing in Ubuntu Mono should be reported as individual hinting bugs.
