Bug Description

The character 'w' and also 'v' are displayed wrong, with a 'loose' end.
Is this already noticed by anyone?

I would like to see a fix for this bug because i really like the font!

Janjaap: hinting artefacts such as this occur when the font renderer intentionally distorted the placement of the nodes at small sizes to try and get them to align with pixel boundaries.

These artefacts are highly dependent upon the platform (OS and version), size (DPI, PPI, sub-pixel detection or grayscaling …), and renderer settings (method, configuration, and whether manual hinting instructions are being used, or only used in one direction).

Please could you:

  1. Include what machine/OS/version you have seen this on
  2. Copy-and-paste this string between the quotes: "" and take a fresh screenshot

These characters are three debug characters that will show us the version of the font and whether manual hints are in use or not.

The problem affects multiple OS versions and resolutions. So I guess it's a bug in Windows 7, 8 and 10 as well.

*Temparary solution*
I generated a version of the ubuntu light and bold types, using fontsquirrel.com.
I checked 'remove kerning' and made the x-height match with some other fonts, like arial, verdana and courier. The result is that the characters 'v' and 'w' now are displayed correct.

Using the 0.83 version of Ubuntu the presentation of field like 'labels' an 'gridvalues' in our software results in a lower position of the characters (2px) which were cut off at the bottom, because of that. Using the generated version using fontsquirrel.com, this problem seems to be solved.

I think it has something to do with the x-heigt of the Ubuntu font and/or the kerning between the characters.

But of course this is a temporary fix which I hope you can fix for the long term. I like to update once in a while to keep the font up-to-date.

Additional information:
- we use delphi (7) and Progress and AS to develop our software
- When a turn off 'cleartype' the Ubuntu is displayed correct (but that's ugly, i think ;-)) using the ClearType option in Windows gives the strange result.

The software is used on Windows machines and is not available for another OS, except for the AS/Flex interface.

This is a result that i received from fontsquirrel.com when I used Verdana to match the x-height. This version works well on our machines.

Janjaap: I'm sorry to press the point, but *please could you provide a screenshot with the debugging symbols*.

Hello Janjaap, thank you for the screenshot the version debug character. In this screenshot I cannot see the manual-hinting debug character ("", U+F000). Was there an issue with copying and pasting?

All I see are the quotes when I paste the characters..

I tried to paste it in InDesign, that worked fine.

Yes, the '88' means that the manually-coded hint instructions are not being used; otherwise a number is shown which is the pixel size the font is being rendered at.

OK. What is your advice?

FYI:

We're developing software using Progress and Delphi 7.
I don't know if there are additional options like 'hint instructions' available for fonts in these languages.
Is this something you can support/advice me?
