They can test their changes using my "test in Pages or TextEdit" steps above. Both of those are free software on a Mac.

I managed to solve this problem!
Anyone who is experiencing the same issue, may follow these steps:

Uninstall the Ubuntu Font Family from Font Book;
get the .ttf files from http://font.ubuntu.com again;
download TransType (7-days trial version);
open it;
drag the folders containing the font (ubuntu and Ubuntu_Mono) into its window;
select all the styles, this way

re-convert the fonts — File > Convert Selected;
open re-converted .ttfs and install.
