Cody: regarding the "Apparently the issue is that some of the tables in the font are larger than recommended" do you have any links that we can start to work from? I did found:
"About the Mac OS X v10.6.7 Snow Leopard Font Update"

and would be interested to know if applying/unapplying that update alters the issue.
We can perhaps look into trying to workaround the issue; Cody: could you also paste precisely which commands you are suggesting running (and that have worked for you).
