I had this same issue in Adium - em-dashes showed up as an umlauted W.
Apparently the issue is that some of the tables in the font are larger than recommended, and this causes problems with Apple's TrueType engine. The easiest fix is just to decompile and then recompile the font with 'ttx' (from the Python 'fonttools' package).
