Thank you Jay; I think we can be reasonably confident that this was/is a bug in Apple Keynote 6 with the Smart Quotes features. I think Kevin's hypothesis of a typo between U+2019/U+2019 is a likely one, which would also explain why such a bug would have been fixed in a later version of Apple Keynote.
The bug in Keynote can be worked around by disabling Smart Quotes in Keynote using:
