Hi all. @jsl1 . I have found a workaround which worked for me.
- clean install
- usb stick with 20.10
1. boot usb
2. Select LIVE boot (don't install right away)
3. When in linux run apt update && apt upgrade
4. Run the install-linux on desktop
5. When asked, do no select "third party drivers"
This worked for me. After install, went in to settings and added third party drivers (nvidia)
All is working good.
system: intel i7-8700K and nVidia GeForce GTX 1080 Ti
