OK, So we are indeed narrowing the focus of what the actual issue is, and yup it's looking like a race condition somewhere. My slow old machine generally doesn't give me these problems, so this is why it's a game of 20 questions, and I'm relying on you to help me figure it out.

As I suspected though, the splitter structure is there, so the terminals are not actually stacked. By the look of your webm file the splitter position is a) getting set to zero, or b) getting set before the widget is ready to accept such events.

Out of curiosity does the patch in https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1646257 fix the problem for you? The described symptoms seems very closely related. Two unreproducable (for me) bugs potentially killed with one user-supplied patch? Oh happy days!
