Yes, it would be nice to modify this, but this requires a bit of design work to make it work correctly. In the short-term we are instead focused on making other, more useful compression algorithms available to snap publishers. We may also at some point in the distant future enable user-specified algorithms to be chosen so that for optimum performance a user could specify they want no compression or for optimum disk usage they can specify they want maximal compression instead (at a performance cost).
