Think ive finally resolved the issue

even though i had uninstalled 2.6.3 it still left files on the system so I went and manually deleted the following files

C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\qBittorrent - there are 2 .ini files in this folder

also

C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Local Settings\Application Data\qBittorrent - there are 4 folders in here to be deleted with various files in them that get left behind

Lastly i downloaded ccleaner (http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner) installed and ran this. I deleted several registry keys that qBittorrent left behind.

rebooted and reinstalled 2.6.3. I haven't had any crashes in the last 30-40 hours uptime :D
